June Summer Reading Adventures: Summer Book Picks for Every Age
Summer is finally here! June is the perfect time to slow down, enjoy longer days, and dive into a great book. Whether your child is reading independently, enjoying family read-alouds, or tackling a classic novel, reading during the summer helps students maintain their skills while discovering exciting new worlds.
This month, I want to share three adventure-filled books. These stories feature exploration, courage, imagination, and unforgettable characters. These books make the perfect companions for summer break!

Level A (Grades 3–5)
Swiss Family Robinson
What would you do if you were stranded on a tropical island? Follow the Robinson family as they build shelters, explore their new home, and learn to survive together. This classic is packed with adventure, creativity, and fascinating animals.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Join Tom as he spends his days exploring, rafting, treasure hunting, and finding trouble wherever he goes. Mark Twain’s beloved classic captures the freedom and excitement of childhood summers.
The Chronicles of Narnia Series
Step through the wardrobe and enter a magical world filled with talking animals, epic battles, and unforgettable adventures. Narnia has inspired generations of readers and remains one of the best fantasy series for young readers. Start at the beginning with The Magician’s Nephew or jump right into the Pevensie’s story with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Level B (Grades 6–8)
The Hobbit
When Bilbo Baggins leaves the comfort of home, he discovers that even the most ordinary person can become a hero. This beloved fantasy adventure is filled with dragons, treasure, danger, and courage. If your child enjoys this book, there are three more books in The Lord of the Rings series.
Summer is the perfect time to immerse yourself in Tolkien’s epic masterpiece. Follow Frodo and his companions on a journey that explores friendship, sacrifice, courage, and hope.
Challenge: Read one book in The Lord of the Rings series and then watch the movie. Which do you prefer?
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
Based on the true story of Nathaniel Bowditch, this novel follows a young man who overcomes obstacles through hard work, perseverance, and a love of learning. Readers will enjoy the exciting adventures at sea and the inspiring lessons about determination.
Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World
This remarkable nonfiction account tells the true story of Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition. Readers will be amazed by the courage, leadership, and survival skills that helped the crew endure one of history’s greatest adventures.
Level C (Grades 9–12)
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Jules Verne takes readers on an extraordinary expedition beneath the Earth’s surface. Filled with mystery, science, and imagination, this classic remains a favorite for adventurous readers.
Treasure Island
Pirates, buried treasure, mutiny, and high-seas adventure make this one of the most iconic summer reads ever written. Few books capture the excitement of a summer adventure quite like Treasure Island.
Around the World in Eighty Days
Can one man really travel around the globe in just eighty days? This exciting adventure follows Phileas Fogg as he races across continents, encountering unexpected challenges along the way.
Make Reading Part of Your Summer Adventure
Summer reading doesn’t have to feel like schoolwork. Let your child read outside, bring books on family trips, listen to audiobooks during long drives, or enjoy a family read-aloud in the evenings.
The goal is simple: build a love of reading while creating lasting memories.
